Dauin Parish Church
Patron: St. Nicholas of Tolintine
Fiesta: September 10
Since Dauin only had a small church with thin walls made of bricks, Fr. Navarro initiated the construction of a church made of stone. He was the town’s parish priest up to his death in 1864.
His successor, Fr. Tomas Gonzales (1864-1874), continued work on the church and built the convent as well.
Additional work was undertaken by succeeding parish priests. Fr. Manuel Cabriada, who served from 1874 to 1898, renovated the church to make it “spacious, proportionate, and beautiful,” according to the book “Handurawan: Visita Iglesia Negros Y Recoletos.”
It added that he also added an “elegant porch made of fine square hewn stones and slender columns.” He finished his work on the church in 1880.
Dauin was one of the oldest towns organized in Negros Oriental. It was under the spiritual administration of the parish of Siaton. Father Jose Barredo administered Dauin in 1796 until his death in 1835. Due to frequent Moro raids, he succeeded in transferring the town to its actual site now.
The parish of Dauin was entrusted to the Recollects in 1857. By the order of Bishop Romualdo Jimeno of Cebu, Fr. Manuel Navarro arrived as the first Recollect parish priest to administer it until his death on August 29, 1864. When he came, the town had only a small church with thin walls made of bricks. He then started the construction of a church made of stone. He was succeeded by Father Tomas Gonzales as parish priest from 1864 until 1874. Father Manuel Cabriada came in 1874 to serve as parish priest until 1898. He remodeled the church in 1874 to make it more spacious, proportionate and beautiful. He added the elegant porch made of fine square hewn stones and slender columns. He finished remodeling the church in 1880.
The Revolution of 1898 forced the Recollects priests to vacate the parish. Meanwhile, the secular priest Fr. Francisco Locsin administered it until their return in 1912. They finally ceded the parochial administration of Dauin to the secular clergy in 1969 with Fr. Leandro Palacios as the Recollect parish priest (1964-1969)
The colonial Church of San Nicolas can be found in the town of Dauin. The church is the oldest in the Negros Oriental province. Along the beach and on the front of the church can be explored the ruins of two dome-shaped watchtowers. The local legends are saying that the watchtowers used to be a warning post against pirates.
Part of Dauin municipality is also the Apo Island, one of world’s best ten dive locations. Dauin is visited by many tourists coming to enjoy diving in the turquoise clear waters and exploring the amazing underwater gardens, the marine life with exotic fish and beautiful corals. Apo Island is made of 72 hectares of volcanic land. This island on the eastern horizon of Negros Oriental province is an international favorite for snorkel enthusiasts and scuba diving fans.
The Dauin’s coast offers many scuba dive sites featuring beautiful coral reefs.
